Caring for your board.
Solid hardwood and solid brass ask for very little — a little attention keeps both looking their best for years.
Everyday
Hand-wash with warm water and a little mild detergent, then towel-dry straight away and stand it to air for a few minutes before putting it away. Don't leave it soaking, sitting in water, or drying wet on one side — and never put it in the dishwasher.
Feeding the timber
Every so often — or whenever the timber looks dry or pale — wipe on a thin coat of food-safe board conditioner or oil. Your board comes with a small sample pot to get you started; after that, any food-safe board conditioner or oil will do. Let it soak in, then buff off the excess with a clean cloth.
The brass
The brass inlay and feet are sealed, so they need nothing at all and shouldn't tarnish. They may deepen very gently over time.
What to avoid
No dishwasher, no soaking, no bleach or harsh scourers. Don't rest very hot pans straight from the stove on the surface — use a trivet. And cut on the timber rather than across the brass.
Looked after this way, your board will only get better with use. Any questions, email contact@hewn.au.
