FAQ

Questions & answers.

The things people ask most. If yours isn't here, email contact@hewn.au and we'll answer it.

Can I actually chop on it?

Yes. The whole top is solid, unbroken hardwood with a food-safe mineral oil and beeswax finish — made to be cut on. The brass sits on the sides and underneath, well clear of the knife.

What timbers can I choose?

Spotted Gum, Blackbutt, Tasmanian Oak and Tasmanian Blackwood — each chosen for grain, density and quiet character. No two boards are identical.

What's the brass, and does it touch my food?

It's solid brass: a line inlaid flush along the two long sides, a small detail at the corners, and four turned feet that lift the board off the bench. It sits on the sides and base, not the working surface, so it never touches your food.

What size is the board, and how heavy?

The standard board is approximately 500 × 390 × 33 mm and weighs roughly 5–7 kg. As each is made by hand, sizes vary slightly.

Can I order a different size?

Yes — that's what the bespoke page is for. Tell us the dimensions you'd like and how you'd like the brass finished, and we'll quote you. Custom boards are priced per piece.

How long does it take?

Around 2–4 weeks, as each board is made to order. Need it sooner for a gift or an event? Reach out and we'll tell you whether we can expedite it.

How do I look after it?

Hand-wash and dry, and treat it now and then with a food-safe board conditioner — a sample pot comes in the box to get you started. Full details are on the Care page.

How much is shipping?

What if it arrives damaged?

Send us a few photos and we'll repair, replace or refund it. The full policy is on the Shipping & Returns page.
